ABC and More

2 weeks after school re-open, I foresee little Chi would learn about A-B-C. Not all, but at least the first 5 letters. I have not teach him alphabet, he can only sing the song.

He brought an alphabet exercise book home and traced letters via dot-to-dot. What surprised me was this,
A star above the word indicates he managed to read it with little guidance
he has started reading the above flash cards (and what, he's only 4!). I must admit, I learned those words in Primary 2 or 3(?) during my years.
Who says kindy is all about play, sing and learn? Is it always so competitive? Looks like I'm not only busy at work but will be busy monitor both my kids' academic, too.

    4. Lina's boy is so good and obedient. Mine is a naughty brat, only scared of teachers.

But I wonder, am I turning into a kiasu mom or the education here is forcing me to become one?

  3. Letters, not alphabet. The English alphabet has 26 letters... Very common Malaysian error.

    6. Chapter 3 of Gass, Susan M. and Larry Selinker. 2001. Second Language Acquisition, An Introductory Course. Here, a distinction is made between an error and a mistake from an SLA perspective, where:

"Mistakes are akin to slips of the tongue. That is, they are generally one-time-only events. The speaker who makes a mistake is able to recognize it as a mistake and correct it if necessary. An error, on the other hand, is systematic. That is, it is likely to occur repeatedly and is not recognized by the learner as an error" (p. 67)

When I teach my son to pronounce the words, I need to do some relevant "action" to get him understand. I feel like a clown while hopping like a rabbit :p

My hanzi (or rather kanji) reading ability is about the level of a four-year-old Japanese kid's! :p

    1. I agree they are more for intermediate level and not for 4 years old!

My son is learning Chinese character as well, but I failed my Chinese test because I was sent to a Malay/English school. So, high5, my level is about the same as yours, Ru :)

  18. Hi Yvonne, I might be going Taiping for a holiday, what's nice in Taiping, can recommend?

    1. Great to hear that you are planning to come here, Libby.

If you're looking for food, Taiping is famous for its hawker food and seafood.
Casual market operates from morning till evening, offers variety of hawker food.
Kuala Sepetang, located about 15-20km from the town has a few nice and cheap seafood restaurants.

As for scenery, you can visit our infamous lake garden. Or you can go up to Maxwell Hill, via foot or jeep :)

Taiping is a very lay-back town, everything and everyone are in the slow pace, haha!

    2. Laid back la Ah Hua. Later teacher scold you pulak for using a wrong word. Kekeke

  21. Kids learn very fast nowadays, they are very different from our time. What looks difficult to us may not be so for them. Their brains are like sponge! :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi Yvonne, wow! He is learning fast! And yes, today's kindergartens do take a very educational approach where kids are concerned.
Next to where we live is a kindergarten, with kids as young as 3, and many from China, with parents not speaking England, ha ha...
And I can hear these kids talking in perfect Canadian accented English.

Your boy will keep surprising you in the days to come....maybe even tell you he like the little girl with pony tail sitting next to him, ha ha ha.
    Have fun, Yvonne, stay beautiful.
    Lee.
